Easy Air Fryer Birthday Cake Donuts
Seriously, what can’t you make in the air fryer? Last week I shared our new favorite chicken tender recipe and today, donuts! Two ends of the food spectrum, but both made in the air fryer! These easy donuts are actually birthday cake donuts and are so fun to make with your kids!
This easy donut recipe is made without yeast or biscuit dough. You make a super simple dough made with Greek yogurt and then roll it out and use a biscuit cutter to cut the donuts. No donut pan needed! We have also tried the air fryer donuts made with biscuits and they are good, too, but my girls love cake donuts from the donut shoppe and these are just as good!
You just need few simple things to make donuts in the air fryer
Yeast is not my favorite ingredient to work with, unless its the fool-proof quick rise yeast like I used for cinnamon rolls. I like to bake but yeast can be so fickle. I love that this is a donut recipe without yeast which means there is no rise time. You make a quick dough with Greek yogurt! You can also use yogurt to make air fryer bagels, which is a great healthy bagel recipe hack!
This is a basic cake donut recipe and we decided add sprinkles to the batter and then top them with an easy glaze and sprinkles to make them birthday cake themed, but you could do whatever you’d like! A chocolate ganache would be delicious or cinnamon and brown sugar.
How to make donuts in the air fryer
Easy Air Fryer Donuts
These delicious Air Fryer Birthday Cake Donuts will be a hit with your kids!
- ½ cup granulated sugar
- 4 tbsp butter softened
- 2 eggs room temperature
- 2 3/4 cups all purpose flour
- 2 tsp baking powder
- 1 tsp salt
- ¾ cup vanilla greek yogurt
- 1 cup confectioners sugar
- 4 tbsp heavy whipping cream
- ½ cup sprinkles
In a large bowl, cream butter and sugar. Add greek yogurt, and eggs. Whisk until well combined. In a separate small bowl, mix flour, baking powder, salt, and 3 tbsp sprinkles. Slowly incorporate dry ingredients into the wet ingredients. Use your hands to knead the dough. Place dough into the fridge for 1 hour prior to cooking. (or overnight to prepare the next morning)
Lightly flour a cutting board or flat work surface. Roll dough out with a rolling pin to ½” thickness. Use a 3” biscuit cutter to cut 8 holes into the dough. Use a ½” biscuit cutter to cut the center of each circle to form a donut.
Preheat the air fryer at 350* for 5 minutes.
Spray air fryer basket with non-stick cooking spray. Arrange donuts in the air fryer at least ½” apart, multiple batches may be necessary. Cook for 8 minutes, flipping halfway through. **Cook donut holes at the same time.**
While the donuts cook, prepare the frosting. Add confectioners sugar to a small bowl. Whisk in heavy whipping cream until smooth.
Remove donuts from the air fryer and let cool for 5 minutes.
One at a time, dip each donut into glaze, then immediately cover with sprinkles. This way the glaze will not set and the sprinkles will stick to the donuts. Serve donut holes on the side.
