Our Favorite Baby Safety Product

Our little girl has been here with us for three weeks now and we couldn’t be more in love with this new addition to our family! I had a really hard pregnancy and was truly so miserable for so many months, so I am thrilled to finally start feeling like myself again. Of course, we are exhausted from the nightly feedings and non-stop energy of my four year old, but we are settling into a routine, or at least trying to!

In May, I participated in the One Room Challenge and worked super hard on our nursery. In a five week span, we completely redid our guest room and turned it into our baby girl’s nursery. I am thrilled with how it turned out and it is the perfect space for our little one. The only item that was missing was a monitor. A video monitor is our favorite baby safety product and I deliberated for months on what type of monitor to get.

We absolutely loved our video monitor for our first child, but after four years of use, the night vision no longer works and it won’t charge. Our biggest mistake was putting the monitor camera in reach of a curious toddler. She often got a hold of the camera and threw it on the ground. With this baby, I knew that a shelf high on a wall would be a much better option to preserve the life of the camera! Our easy DIY Wooden Book Shelves fit the monitor perfectly and ensure that no one will be throwing the monitor around!

I was thrilled to receive the VTech Safe&Sound VM342 Digital Video Monitor with Wide-Angle Lens and Standard Lens for our baby and couldn’t wait to try it. I really think that video monitors are a crucial new born must have and I even included it on my must have list for a second child! Being able to see, in addition to hear your baby, really gives you much better peace of mind.

I love the VM342 Digital Video Monitor for a few reasons. The first is that we live in a much bigger house than we did last time we had an infant. This monitor has a 1,000 foot range, which allows me to go most places in our home and still keep an eye on our baby. I also love that I can add additional cameras as we need them and that I can talk to the baby through the monitor. Sometimes they just need to hear your voice!087e265f-7f85-4a61-af88-200c8ce7045f_1.7551f8c53412717d59169328a2b15cfc

The monitor fits perfectly on the book shelves. I did use a small book to slightly tilt it forward. I love that I can zoom in from the parental unit as well!

Other Important Safety Measures for the Nursery

I took a few other precautions our nursery to make sure it was safe as well. We used cordless blinds to ensure that no little ones would get tangled up in the cords. We used the Levolor Blinds from Lowe’s and have been really thrilled with them.

Our crib also doesn’t have any blankets, bumpers, or other loose items. I used a firm mattress, fitted crib sheet, and crib skirt, and that’s it. No pillows, blankets, or toys necessary.

We replaced our outdated light fixture with a ceiling fan. I have read that constant air movement is healthier for babies while they are sleeping. It also helps when your old house doesn’t have any AC!

I would love to hear how you made your baby’s nursery safe or if you have any must have baby products that you swear by! Let me know!!

Childproofing is definitely important when you have very young kids at home.
