Mudroom Addition Plans!

When we moved into our house there were a few things we knew we wanted to do in the first couple years of living here. Repaint, remodel the bathrooms, do some basic upgrades, and most importantly, add a mudroom off the back of our kitchen. Our kitchen is the main entrance for us and while it works, it is not an ideal situation. We don’t use our front door as an entrance because we don’t have a key for it. The door is original to the house and the previous owner told us that a key can’t be made.

Our back entrance is off of a small porch in our back yard. When you open the door to the kitchen, you are right in front of the pantry and the refrigerator, which is a busy area of the kitchen. This means our shoes get piled up right in the fridge area and then you have to walk through the kitchen and the foyer to get to our coat closet (which we added last year, our entire main floor was closet-less!)

Our newly built coat closet (the wood still needs stained in this picture! it has since been done!)

Lovely right?

This annoys me for obvious reasons. I hate the ugly pile of shoes and also the muddy shoe and paw prints that get tracked all through our house. We know that the best solution for this problem is closing in that small back porch and making it an official mudroom. We had originally planned to do this all ourselves, but at the last minute, decided to hire it out to someone to build the “shell.” We are still in the preliminary stages of planning everything out, but I am excited that this has become a don’t do it yourself project. It is nice to have one of those once in a while! This project is still very early in the plans, but when Carpet One contacted me about how I could turn one of my project dreams into reality, I thought this would be the perfect place to showcase their flooring products!

Here is my inspiration board for the mudroom! I want to keep it super clean and bright but with rustic touches to match the rest of our house.

I mentioned that this is a don’t do it yourself project which my friends at Carpet One like to call #ddiy. While I love the satisfaction of knowing I built something completely on my own, we were worried that since this is a project that will be seen from the outside and inside of our house, any imperfections would be glaringly obvious. Ryan and I are slowly learning how to do a lot around the house but our work is definitely not perfect. In our bathroom remodel we struggled and struggled to mud the drywall. And let me tell you…it sucked. Mudding those stupid seams was one of the most frustrating things I have ever done. At many points we wanted to call someone to finish it for us. The final straw was when my eye got infected from the plaster dust. I do not want to do that, ever again. So, it is nice that this project is not completely on our shoulders, although we will do some of the finish work. I laid the floor in our basement bathroom as well and I really started off with a bang by really screwing it up. Luckily, my Dad came over and was able to turn me in the right direction, literally, because I was laying the floor backwards.

I love how the floor came out but it was a rough start! I think I think I’ll stick to #DDIY this time!

I am really excited about this Carpet One Vinyl Plank Flooring. I think it will be really durable and perfect for a mudroom setting. It won’t show dirt and will hold up to any wear and tear. This was my favorite color that I saw in the store. The salesperson told me that this comes in one piece so it holds up to moisture really well since water cannot get under it.

I also loved meeting the employees at Carpet One. They recently laid carpet at my parents’ house, and they were so pleased with the experience as well! Each Carpet One is locally owned and operated, which super friendly and knowledgeable staff. I love that they actually come to your house and do all the measuring for you, FOR FREE!, so that you don’t have to worry about getting the measurements exact yourself.

I loved looking at all the different types of flooring at Carpet One and was actually surprised to see what a selection they had, When you hear Carpet One, you think of carpet obviously, but they had so much more than that. I will definitely be stopping in more often to check out what they have for all of our projects! I loved this rug pattern and think it would be great as an area carpet.

I agree that some projects are best left to people who do it full time! They just know the tricks of the trade to get it done right the first time! I love the planking you are looking at! That will be such a nice addition to your new mudroom idea! #client
