What is Cinco de Mayo?
Did you know the true history of Cinco de Mayo has nothing to do with Mexican Independence and isn’t actually celebrated in most of Mexico? It celebrates the Mexican victory over the French at the Battle of Puebla. During the Civil Rights movement, Chicano (Mexican) leaders used Cinco de Mayo as a rallying day for Mexican-Americans to help celebrate their culture and heritage and it has caught on! So it really is about more than cerveza and margaritas! There’s your history lesson for the day!
