DIY Canvas Art

July 13, 2015

I am so excited to be joining today with lots of other talented ladies to share with you 15 DIY Wall Art projects! Creating art for your home is so fun because you not only save money, but you truly get exactly what you want. Sometimes I stalk the aisles of Homegoods for specific art work because I know what I have in mind, and it just doesn’t exist. When this happens, I find it is best to give up on the stores and see what you can put together yourself! That being said, there are definitely times when I just want to buy a finished product and be done with it, so I am definitely not one to judge you if you just buy it! I am hoping that you will find inspiration in one of the DIY projects shared here today though! There are some absolutely gorgeous projects!

The project I am sharing today is DIY Canvas Art and this is so easy and really doesn’t require any painting skills. You basically just squirt some paint out and then spread it around.

Start with a blank canvas in any size you like. I grab these when they are buy 1 get 1 free at Michael’s so that I always have a couple on hand. I find myself wrapping them with colorful wrapping paper for party backdrops, pinning pictures on them for events, etc. So when I wanted to DIY some art for our recently remodeled bathroom, I got out a medium sized canvas I already had and then lots of small acrylic paints I had laying around. The bathroom is painted a light blue so I wanted to stick with colors that would compliment with that. I was thinking beachy, so went with off-white, gray, blue, and green.

I just squirted out blobby lines of paint and then started smoothing them out. The colors mixed on my brush, but I liked how they were combining so that it didn’t look too perfect.

Here’s how it looked after everything was smeared through once. Now you could keep it like this, or add more layers. I added more until I got the look I liked. I alternated using brushes with paint on them and clean brushes that helped add a blended look. Keep squirting and smearing until you get a look you like! Don’t forget to brush some paint on the sides so that your edges aren’t white! DSC00811

I was hard at work so I don’t have any more action shots. I just kept adding more paint and smoothing till I got what I wanted. I finished by taking a clean brush and blending all the lines. You really can’t mess this up because if you do something you don’t like, just wait till it dries and add more paint over the part you don’t like. Here is the finished product! This is hanging in our spare bedroom because the light is better, but it lives in our bathroom.

I tried hanging it vertically too and I like that for a change of pace once in a while!

I love the bit of color it adds to the walls in our bathroom and Ryan actually asked me where I bought it from when he came home from work that day so I think it is a success! No money spent and only about half an hour of work! Don’t forget to check out all the other bloggers participating and if you have your own DIY Wall Art Project, please link it up below!! We will be featuring some of the posts this week!
