cheeseburgerpizza3For me, I know that winter is officially over whenever we bring our grill out from the garage. It is one of my favorite times of the year and I always love thinking up new ways to use our grill. We are not the type of people who just grill different meats. We are the shove everything we possibly can onto the grill type of people. If we are firing up the grill, I like to keep all the meal components out there together to make life easier.

Bacon Cheeseburger Grilled Pizza

We love grilling veggies, fruit, potatoes,  and corn on the cob, but I think our absolute favorite is grilled pizza. It has the taste of brick oven pizza and just tastes so much better than pizza done in the oven. The crust gets unbelievably crispy and there is a slight hint of smokiness from the grill. I am always try to come up with new grilled pizza recipes. We have tried and enjoyed all different types, but we have really found a winner this time with this Bacon Cheeseburger Grilled Pizza.cheeseburgerpizza2

A crucial element of this pizza is the replacement of pizza sauce with ketchup and mustard, because what’s a cheeseburger without those two condiments!? Having grown up in Western Pa and having gone to college in Pittsburgh, I am a Heinz girl through and through. I truly cannot eat any ketchup other than Heinz, all the other brands just don’t taste as good! When I heard that Walmart is now carrying New Heinz® Yellow Mustard in a squeeze bottle, I knew I had to get it because I have a serious thing for mustard.Bacon Cheeseburger Grilled Pizza

Mustard has a funny history in our house. Neither my husband nor I liked it at all our entire lives, until we went on our honeymoon. We stayed at a fabulous 5 star resort that served gourmet burgers on the beach everyday at lunch time. The burgers were fantastic, but were made even better by the addition of mustard. Since we weren’t really mustard fans, we didn’t think we would like them, but after the first day, we were hooked and suddenly became mustard’s biggest fans! I now buy so much mustard and insist on having every flavor imaginable, so we have an entire fridge shelf dedicated to it!Bacon Cheeseburger Grilled Pizza

So how does my new Heinz Yellow Mustard compare to our big shelf of mustard? Just as I expected from a Heinz product, it tastes great! I hate when mustard is too strong and this one has a great mix of vinegar and spices to make it tangy and flavorful, but not overpowering. I especially love that the first squirt out of the bottle is not a watery mess either and doesn’t make this crust soggy at all! It is definitely the perfect topping for this pizza!cheeseburgerpizza4

I used mini pizza crusts in this recipe because I find them easier to work with on the grill. If you are doing a full sized pizza, the amounts listed in the recipe should still work because I made two mini pizzas and still had leftover filling.  Both the beef and the bacon need to be cooked on the stove top, but can be done ahead of time so that when dinner rolls around, you can just throw everything together and be ready!

Bacon Cheeseburger Grilled Pizza

Ingredients

  • 2 mini pizza crusts or 1 full sized crust
  • 3/4 lb lean ground beef
  • 1/2 red onion diced, divided
  • 1/2 cup sharp cheddar cheese
  • 1/2 cup provolone cheese
  • 6 slices of bacon cooked and then cut into small pieces
  • 3 tbsp. olive oil
  • 2 garlic cloves smashed
  • salt and pepper to taste
  • 1/3 cup Heinz Ketchup add more to taste
  • 2 tbsp. Heinz Mustard plus 1 tbsp. for drizzling add more to taste

Instructions

  1. Prepare your meat by preheating a pan to medium high heat. When hot, add beef and cook until browned. Add half of the red onion and cook until softened.
  2. Add ketchup, mustard, salt and pepper and stir. Taste and add more of any of the ingredients if desired.
  3. Set meat aside or refrigerate until dinner time.
  4. Right before preparing pizzas, add the garlic cloves to your olive oil to infuse the oil with the flavor.
  5. Preheat your grill to medium heat.
  6. Prepare your pizza crust by brushing the garlic infused olive oil on the topping side of the pizza.
  7. When hot, place the topping side of your pizza face down on the grill and cook for 2-3 minutes or until grill marks appear.
  8. Flip pizza over and then top with more olive oil, meat mixture, cheese, bacon, and remaining raw onion.
  9. Lower the cover on your grill and let pizza cook until cheese is melted and crust is warmed through, about 5 minutes.
  10. Remove from grill and drizzle with mustard.
  11. Serve immediately and enjoy!

This looks good! My hubby and I love to order dominos bacon cheeseburger pizza… But it’s so pricy! This looks like a great alternative! I love your story of how you and your hubby fell in love with mustard on your honeymoon… Unfortunitally I am still on the never liked mustard in my whole life side of the equation… So I’ll propbally leave that off! Great recipe though! Can’t wait to try it!

You must immediately! I was so looking forward to the leftovers today! The crust stays crispy even after reheating in the microwave!

One of my son’s favorite pizzas at the local pizza buffet is cheeseburger pizza. I have to give this a try. I think he’ll love it!

We have been grilling pizza for a few years but I don’t know why it took me so long to combine pizza and my favorite grilled food, cheeseburgers!

I love pizza! I’ve never tried a cheeseburger pizza, though. These look and sound delicious! I think once all this rain stops we need to fire up the grill!

This looks delicious! I love the idea of bbq’n pizza. I am a vegetarian so I would have to modify it for me but I know my husband would love this too. I think I am definitely going to have to add it to our bbq list. 🙂

Maybe you could do black beans instead? I love substituting those for ground beef in recipes!
