DIY Charging Station & Cord Organizer
DIY Charging Station & Cord Organizer

You know what really annoys me? Cords. I hate when cords are everywhere. Not only are they an eye sore, but they are laying there, just asking for toddlers to touch them. That’s why creating a DIY charging station can be a perfect solution. When cords are laying around, there’s no stopping a little one from playing with them, no matter how many times you tell them no.

So these cords in our living room were driving me bonkers.
These cords are the chargers for our Ipad, Iphones, and the lamp is connected in there too.
I knew I had to organize this somehow. Inspired by the Bajan Texan, I went to HomeGoods in search of of a decorative box. I was ecstatic when I found one on the clearance section for $2.00!! I brought it home and cut a hole with an exacto knife in the back.
I ran the cords threw the hole and then just laid all the chargers in the box.
Now my table looks like this!! No more cords dangling!

When I want to charge my phone, I just pull the cord out and set my phone on the box! Perfect! Can’t beat that for two dollars!
I love it so much that I went back to HomeGoods and bought another box for our bedroom! Can’t wait to see how that one turns out!

DIY Charging Station Ideas, Organization Tips, and Upgrades

Now that you’ve built your DIY charging station and cord organizer, take it a step further with these smart add-ons, styling options, and organization tips. These upgrades will not only improve function but also give your setup a sleek, clutter-free aesthetic that works for any space—whether it’s your home office, kitchen counter, or entryway drop zone.

Add-On Features to Upgrade Your Charging Station

If you’re looking to elevate your DIY charging station, consider integrating some of the following:

  • Built-In Power Strip or USB Hub: Install a power strip with USB ports directly inside the station to keep all chargers in one place and avoid external clutter.
  • Cable Pass-Through Holes: Use a drill or grommet tool to create clean pass-throughs for cords, which reduces visual mess and prevents tangling.
  • Wireless Charging Pad: Cut a space into the surface of your charging station to embed a wireless charger for a modern, cord-free experience.
  • Magnetic Cord Holders: Add magnetic clips to the sides or interior of your box to secure unused cables and prevent them from sliding around.
  • Ventilation Holes: If your charging station is enclosed, add a few small holes to allow heat to escape and protect your devices.

Materials and Style Customization

Match your DIY charging station to your home décor using these styling suggestions:

  • Rustic Look: Use reclaimed wood or distressed finishes and label each section with a wood burner or chalkboard paint.
  • Modern Minimalist: Opt for white, black, or matte gray paint with hidden compartments and sleek cable routing.
  • Family-Friendly: Personalize with names or icons for each family member’s device and include a drawer or basket for headphones and other tech accessories.

Organization Hacks for Managing Cords

Even the best charging stations can get messy without a good cord management system. Try these:

  • Color-Code Your Cables: Use colored velcro ties or washi tape to match each cord to a specific device or person.
  • Shorten Excess Cord Length: Wrap cords using twist ties or rubber cable organizers to avoid bulk.
  • Label Each Slot: Whether you’re using labels, vinyl decals, or a label maker, identifying each port or device spot helps reduce confusion and lost cables.

Best Places to Use Your DIY Charging Station

This project isn’t just for the living room. Consider placing charging stations in:

  • Entryway or Mudroom: Perfect for dropping off phones, tablets, and smartwatches when coming home.
  • Kitchen Counter or Coffee Bar: Keep devices charged while following recipes or enjoying morning coffee.
  • Bedroom Nightstand: Tidy up bedside clutter while charging your phone and smartwatch overnight.
  • Home Office or Desk Setup: Integrate tech storage into your workspace for a streamlined look.

Why a DIY Charging Station is Worth It

A custom charging station offers a blend of style and functionality that pre-made options can’t match. By organizing cables and centralizing your charging setup, you’ll reduce clutter, extend the life of your cords, and keep your devices easily accessible.

    1. Thanks Kimberly! I hate cords too and always worry they are too enticing for small little kid hands to grab!
