I have discovered the best way to organize baby clothes! I have been so sick of all the clothing bins cluttering up our third floor for years, so I am so excited to have completed this easy organization project! Now that it is January, do you have the organizational bug too? I love this time of year because it kicks my butt into gear and pushes me to whip this house into shape!
How to organize baby clothes
You guys…something miraculous has occurred here the last few days. I have pulled out and physically touched every last article of baby and kid clothing that we own and reorganized it all. If you have kids, then you know that outgrown clothing bins accumulate so quickly and then they get shoved into attics and spare bedrooms, never to be seen again. We have two girls, so the amount of clothing we have is unbelievable. I was actually embarrassed once we pulled all these bins out and I saw them all together. To make it even worse, we have had many garage sales and I take clothing to a consignment shop every month, but yet we still have all these bins!
I spent a lot of time, but not a lot of money fixing up this bedroom in a previous post! See how I transformed it for less than $100!
These bins are mismatched, some are broken, some are missing lids, some are mislabeled, so the bin method definitely wasn’t working for us. And there are 14 bins here!! From one child! That is just absurd. I needed a new storage solution to get this beast tamed! I went to Lowe’s and headed straight to their bin and plastic storage aisle. You can also find the space bags on Amazon.
I actually ended up skipping over the traditional bins and found these Ziploc® Space Bags® instead! They were tucked under the plastic storage bins. I remember that my Mom had used these in the past and loved them, so I picked up a big variety and headed home!
I wasn’t sure what I would like best so I came home with a bunch of different ones. I purchased the Ziploc® Space Bag® 3 Bag Flat Variety Pack, Ziploc® Space Bag® Large Flat, and the Ziploc® Flexible Totes Jumbo.
I cannot wait to show you what my clothing stash looks like now, but first I want to share my tips on how to best tackle this overwhelming endeavor on the best way to organize baby clothes.
The Konmari Method
I know you don’t want to do this, but you need to pull out every single bin and put them all in one spot, at the same time. If you are familiar with the KonMari method then you know that she recommends doing an entire category of items at one time. So go ahead and make a giant mess, but make sure that you have every article of clothing that you want to organize and lay it all out together. Every single item should be out.
How to sort outgrown kids clothing?
Physically touch every single piece of clothing. Now is the time to sort and decided which pieces are staying and which are going. I made piles of keep, throw away, and send to consignment. Anything that was stained or didn’t look to be in good shape got pitched. Anything that was in good shape but I didn’t love, went into the consignment pile. Seriously, there is no reason to hold on to an article of clothing that you don’t love. Get rid of it!! This entire contractor bag is going to consignment!
Next, sort everything by size and don’t wory about the season! This is the most time consuming part, but it will pay off in the long run when you have more children or you want to hand down clothing to someone else. If it is organized by size, it will make your life so much easier in the long run!
I did consider doing size and season, but that seemed excessive, so I would skip season. I then made labels for each size so that I could easily find the bag I was looking for. Feel free to print this label template and fill in your own sizes!
Ziploc Space Bags
Now here is the fun part. Everything goes into the Ziploc® Space Bags®!! The large flat bags ended up being my favorite size, but the variety pack worked well, too. Once I had all my large bags filled, I found that four large bags fit perfectly in the Ziploc® Flexible Totes Jumbo!
The Ziploc® Space Bags® are so fun and if you haven’t used them before, you will be amazed by how small the bags shrink to! They provide 3x the storage space compared to non-compressed storage volume! They also keep out moisture, mildew, and bugs! I definitely saw a few creepy crawlers in my old bins. The bags have a new film technology that provides even tougher protection, too! My only usage tip is to make sure that you don’t overfill the bag. There is a line on each bag that shows you where to stop. Make sure to stop or your bag will not seal as well!
I also grabbed a package of Ziploc® Big Bags XL because I thought that they would be perfect for the serious stuffed animal storage problem we have going on in this house! I love that the bags are clear so that my daughter can see through them when she is looking for an animal. I can’t wait to pick up another pack of these and store away even more stuffed animals. There are seriously thousands in our house. I ended up using one for coats as well.
Okay, are you ready for this? Remember all those bins? This is what we are left with!! 14 plastic totes became this!!
Those are coats in the bag on the floor and the bag standing alone is an extra large bag full of newborn and 0-3 month items. Can you seriously believe it? I got rid of a large portion of clothing, but still, this is basically the same amount that was in those totes. The amount of space saved is just ridiculous! These are going to get tucked into that closet behind that little white door and then pulled out as the baby grows and needs more clothes. I am seriously thrilled with how this turned out and it is truly the best way to organize baby clothes.

I had such a huge age gap between my girls that I didn’t have an over abundance of baby clothes. However, my sister n law had boys closer in age and had bins and bins of clothes! This is an excellent way to keep them ready for the next baby or to pass them along, without taking up so much room.
Yes! It would be so nice to hand down a small bag of items rather than those large bins!

This is the best organization idea I’ve seen for baby clothes! I have two daughters with a big age gap between them. Six years is just enough to want to save all of big sister’s clothes but not have them hanging in the closet. This is a great idea!

Nope, I haven’t had to re deflate them at all! They are holding up great!
Hello I don’t know if you’ll respond as this is an older post but does vacuum sealing for long periods of time like 5 years do any damage to the clothing? My daughter is 5 and we have another on the way. We’re starting to run out of room (like 2 years ago :)) and I’m trying to find a good way to store these items
It will not cause any damage! I open mine years later, throw in the wash and they are as good as new!
Does it cause any crazy wrinkles that do not come out when washing the clothes? Did you pack them in the bags a certain way to try to avoid this?
Nope, no wrinkle problems! I just throw them in the wash when I unpack and they are good to go!
