Ah yes, summer vacation, it is nice to see you again 🙂 Being a teacher is fantastic. You get to hang out with kids every day, see their eyes light up when they finally get a concept, and really give back to your community. But I bet you have never found a teacher who doesn’t admit that summer vacation is one of the best perks!!
I have big plans and goals for projects around the home this summer and I figured that if I spell it all out here, for all of the internet to see, that it will help me stay accountable and actually get this stuff done!
Here are my top 5 goals to complete this summer
1. Make bedroom headboard
We upgraded to a king size bed at Christmas and the bed had been looking like a bachelor’s without a headboard for too many months now. I would love to upholster something like this!
2. Redo make up vanity
The very first piece of furniture that I finished was my bedroom makeup vanity. I had NO idea what I was doing and just slapped some primer then paint onto an old accent table my parents no longer wanted. At first, the vanity looked great, but soon I realized I made a bunch of mistakes. I didn’t use the right primer so the paint chipped and I used a flat paint that I can’t scrub. So there are make up smears all over the vanity. It is awful. I can’t even allow a picture to grace this page so you will just have to wait for the after! I later got my stuff together and learned how to paint without sanding and this method works great everytime!
3. Paint Studio/Craft Area, including the floors
Want to see a scary looking space? You should check out the room I call my studio. It is part craft room/office/library/throw stuff we don’t know where to put it room. I am soooo happy that we have this space I can use, but I don’t find myself venturing up here as often as I should because it is just not a finished pretty space that I love. I think if I got it painted I would be more inspired to turn it into a room I love. Unfortunately, the previous owners painted this original wood floor black. I know that it can be sanded and refinished, but I am not looking for that kind of work right now, so I think I will just paint over the floor for now and deal with refinishing later.
4. Begin Dining Room redo
After seeing the beautiful dining rooms in the home tour I participated in this week, I realized that I really need to get started on ours! This room has been the least touched room in the house, besides our spare bedrooms, and since I have to sit and look at it every day, I think it is time it received some love too.
I love the bay window and all the light this room receives, a long with the cased opening to our dining room. There are pocket doors here that are lovely, but we almost always keep those closed. This room needs some new furniture, new curtains that allow more light in, and a different paint color. I don’t mind the green in here, but it would never be my first choice, and I think the room needs something lighter that goes better with the Senora Gray in our living room.
5. Closet Remodel
Okay #firstworldproblems right here. I have a walk in closet all to myself which is awesome. Buutttt, whoever designed it forgot that actual clothes would be put in it. So naked, without any clothes in it, the closet is great. Once you add the clothes, you can’t walk through it. You have to duck and dodge items of clothing to get to the other side, which means I shove everything in a reachable spot, which makes it a disaster. I had my Dad come over and draw up a plan to make it more functional. I hope to at least start on that this summer, if not finish it!
We also hope to get our mudroom started this summer which is contingent on getting an actual contractor out here to get started. I have called and called but can’t find someone to start this! So this may be pushed back to fall. We will see!
I hope to get all these things done this summer! We have two vacations planned and I may have a medical issue treated, so life may interrupt my grand plans. If I finish half the list, I will be happy! I will keep you updated and share the projects as they come. I find that I share more recipes during the school year and am able to share more DIY during the summer since I have more time, so I hope to have lots to share this summer!!
How about you? Any DIY plans for the summer? Remodels or basic projects? Or any fun vacations? I would love to hear about them!
