Simple Hacks for Moving with Children

I recently had the chance to sit down with a bunch of fantastic mom bloggers and mom realtors from Northwood Realty to share best practices for moving with children. Thank you to Northwood Realty for sponsoring this post.

Moving is hard. It was seriously one of the most stressful times of my life and when you add kids into the mix, it gets so much harder. I am going to share my favorite tips and tricks that I encountered when we were moving a few years ago! Moving can be so traumatic for kids and it is so important to help make the transition easy for them.  I hope these Simple Hacks for Moving with Children will help make your move seamless and easy and help make your kids feel less anxious about this big life change!

We moved from a really small 2 bedroom home, to a much larger 5 bedroom home. The transition was hard on all of us but we have made our old house our new home!

Tips for Selling Your Home When You Have Children:

  1. Keep lots of baskets and bins around the house. When you get unexpected showings, throw all the toys and clutter into those baskets and cover the top with a pretty throw blanket.
  2. Get rid of as much stuff as possible. Don’t keep anything that you don’t love! This includes furniture that won’t fit into the new house, broken toys, old towels, etc. Involve the kids and sort those toys and clothing items. If you have an abundance of clothing, make sure to check out my tips for organizing kids clothing. Pack away anything that is out of season! You will move before you need those items!
  3. Make some extra dollars by taking clothes to consignment sales, have a garage sale, or post items on local Facebook resell sites. Save all that money made and use to buy new items for the new house.
  4. If a birthday or major holiday occurs when you are selling your home, make sure to ask relatives to keep presents small. Have your kids brainstorm ideas for different gift certificates; the zoo, movie theatre, local arcades, children’s museums, etc. The last thing you want to do is introduce new toys into your staged and clutter-free home!

Tips for Finding a New Home with Kids:

  1. Take the kids with you to look at new homes. Bring a “mother’s helper” with you to help keep the kids occupied and safe while you look around and then let them explore once you have had time to look around.
  2. Don’t compromise on school district. If you don’t like the district, don’t even look at the home. Your kid’s education isn’t worth more square footage. You can improve your home, you can’t improve the district.
  3. Involve the kids in the decision making process. Ask them what they would love in a new home and then ask for feedback after showings. Make them feel apart of the process so they are less overwhelmed.
  4. Fly or take a train to your new home instead of making the long drive with your kids. This will be much quicker and less stressful. You can ship just about all of your belongings including pet shipping or vehicle transport!

Packing and  Moving Day:

  1. If at all possible, try to move during the summer before kids start school. Get them signed up for summer sports so they can meet other students before the school year begins. Most districts begin sports in August.
  2. Get a sitter for your kids. Moving day is chaos and you don’t want your children to be introduced to the new house in that environment. Bring them over later once things have settled down!
  3. Set up your children’s rooms first. While it seems like a lot of work, you want the transition to be easy for them, so focus on getting all their familiar items out before they arrive so it isn’t so overwhelming.
  4. Make your first dinner in your new home extra special. Get the kids’ favorite take out and have a picnic on the floor!

Empty house calls for playing in the curtains!

This book case was unpacked and set up immediately! I knew the familiar books would make the first night in the new house less scary!

  1. Thankfully both of my girls are older (18&11), so moving wouldn’t be as difficult on us. I couldn’t imagine moving with younger kids. These are some great tips though for those that are moving with young children.

  2. Moving is so stressful but even more so with little kids. I love these tips. I totally agree with moving during the summer and before school starts so the kids can start with their new peers. Great advice!

  3. I love these tips. We moved across states just under a year ago with two kids under the age of 5. The last thing we packed up and first thing we unpacked were some of their toys. We needed to keep them occupied as long as possible. It was definitely stressful, but to help take some stress away from both of us and the kids, we hired movers to handle all the actual moving so that we could focus our attention on the kids and making them comfortable.

  4. Nicely written article and comprises some of very important information which could be very helpful in reducing the stress during moving. In order to reduce the stress of moving, we have to hire experienced professionals. We could ask our friend and family member for help in packaging the belongings. The belonging should be properly packed and should be provided with suitable packaging materials in order to prevent their damage. We should book the moving company in advance, so that we could save a lot of money and also could prevent the last minute cancellation.

If you are relocating with children, you will have to consider the impact that the move will have on them. They will have to change schools, leave behind their friends, and quit any extracurricular activities or sports teams they belong to. While they can easily make new friends or get involved in recreation in your new city, leaving behind the familiar in exchange for the alien is often unfathomable for children. They may resist and resent the change, and make the moving process emotionally difficult for the whole family.
