It is week one of the One Room Challenge: Our Basement Family Room and Playroom
I cannot believe we are doing this again, but I have joined up with the One Room Challenge again. I’m thinking I may be crazy because the One Room Challenge is no joke. Six weeks, one room, documenting the entire process for you all and getting up at odd hours of the night to link up my post so you can see it. If you are new to the One Room Challenge, it is one of the biggest home/diy blogging challenges on the Internet. 20 featured bloggers and hundreds of participating bloggers, link up to Calling it Home’s website each week, documenting our progress on a six week home makeover. Six weeks is not much time, so things can get stressful!
The first One Room Challenge, we completed our nursery and I love how that room turned out. It is one of my favorite rooms in the house and it such a cozy and cute space for our baby. This time we are tackling our basement family room/playroom. This is actually part two of this room’s renovation. Last July we made some major changes, which I unfortunately don’t have any photos of! The room was closed off by a wall that made a storage hallway leading back to our utility room and a room that housed our oil tanks. The family room space that we had was so dark, dingy, and closed off. When we removed the wall, we got so much more space. We then added doors to close off the utility spaces, drywalled the remaining walls and covered some old vertical planking, and had the ceiling rafters painted white. We also added a new window, had the walls waterproofed, and then we painted. We also added So fortunately, the heavy construction is done, and this is more of a cosmetic makeover.
We ripped up the disgusting carpet and then I took these pictures, so isn’t normally such a mess! I also didn’t edit these picture!
Here is the plan.
Add flooring. I am SOOOOO excited about this part. We had terribly disgusting carpeting in this room that we just ripped out this week!. We are using my favorite flooring, vinyl planks from Allure! We are using the same flooring that we used in our basement bathroom (you must check out this makeover! we had the world’s UGLIEST bathroom ever!)
Paint. When we had the work done last year, we painted the walls but then the baby was born and we ran out of steam. The stone wall needs to be painted, the walls touched up, the pillars done, and I want to repaint the stairway and the walls there! I am thrilled to be using paint from Sherwin Williams. Their paint is definitely my favorite!
Create separate play/hang out spaces. I really want this to be a fun room that functions for both adults and kids. I need some great storage solutions for all the toys and want this to be a fun and bright space for our kiddos.
New Lighting. We need to do some updating of the lights we have in here. We have some exposed lightbulbs that just aren’t working for me.
New Decor/Furnishings. I have some really great ideas of how I want this space to look and I can’t wait to put them into the room!
I am also so excited to introduce you to some amazing sponsors for this post! I am so lucky to get to work with such great companies!!
Next week I will hopefully have some progress to share!

This space is going to be amazing. I love the design board and I’m happy to be following along with your progress.
Thanks Sue! I hope it turns out how I have planned!
So much to do, but what a great space to have! I love the cute little pillow on your inspiration board 🙂
I can’t wait to see it when it’s done. You have me tempted to work on a one room challenge, I’ve had decluttering and renovations by room on my to do list forever and it just isn’t getting done! Keep up the good work!
What a blank canvas! Excited to see the progress 🙂
Ha, so far there is no progress! I’m hoping for some inspiration to strike here soon!

I cannot wait to see what you do in this space. I always think basements are so hard to work with, but it sounds like you have some awesome ideas! We currently have an unfinished basement that we’d love to work on, but I need some inspiration… so I’ll be following closely 🙂
Thanks Erin! Progress has been slowww so I’m hoping it turns out okay!
