Colorful Washi Tape Christmas Tree #craftamazing [ad]

I feel like I am currently torn between Thanksgiving and Christmas. We still have all our fall decor up and I am haven’t even planned our Thanksgiving menu yet, but I am already thinking of how my tree will look this year and how much shopping I have to do! That in between feeling is even worse for bloggers who are expected to begin sharing fun Christmas DIYs the moment November 1st begins! I have tried to stick to my guns and keep with the correct season and I think my first Christmas post on November 18th isn’t too bad!

I am so excited about this colorful Washi Tape Christmas Tree. It is modern and fun and doesn’t rely on the traditional Christmas colors. Who says you can’t have a colorful Christmas!? I actually don’t do much red and green in our house. I love them both as accent colors, but don’t really care for them together. The fun patterns and colors on this little wooden tree make me smile. While I love this tree, I actually made it for my daughter to use as decor in her room. It is so fun and bright for a little one and it will be the perfect holiday touch in her room. I showed it to her immediately after making it and she told me “Mommy, it is ahhmazing!” Kid approved, can’t beat that!

This tree is really easy once you have all your supplies gathered. I picked up the crooked little wooden tree at the craft store, but you could make your own with wood shims if you wanted. I bought a ton of different colors of Scotch® Expressions Tapes, little rhinestone gems, and Scotch® Create super glue. Seriously, the more colors of tape the better. You can do so many fun holiday and everyday products with the Scotch® Expressions Tapes and I am especially loving the two new watercolor like striped patterns. I can think of so many fun places to use these! I would love to wrap them on a canvas for some fun wall art…so many possibilities, I just need more time in the day!

I knew that this tree would be used and abused by a three year old, so super glue was the way to go to make sure those little gems aren’t all over my house! (Only one day in and I was right…this little tree is being carried everywhere and is being played like a xylophone!)

Start by giving your tree a quick coat of paint. I just used a basic light gray acrylic paint as a base so that I could let some of the wood show. If you want it to have a wooden background, you can skip this step.  Let your paint dry.

Next, start putting strips of your tape across the wood. I didn’t really follow a pattern, but I did leave a few blank spaces just for contrast. Make sure to leave your strips long enough to wrap around to the back so that the edges are finished. Don’t worry about how the back looks, no one will see that! If you have any pieces that won’t stick on the back, give them a little dab of glue. The glitter tape is thicker and didn’t stick as well to the back as the others did.

I then put little dabs of super glue in spots and gently pushed the gems onto the wood. Again, this step isn’t necessary, but I thought the reflection of the rhinestones mimic Christmas lights and my daughter loves how sparkly it is with them!

And that is it! My tree came with a little loop of twine on the back for hanging, but if your’s does not, you could super glue a small piece onto the back.

I found both the tape and the super glue in the crafting aisle at Walmart. You can see the glue hanging out right above the display of tape here in this picture! I have used a few products from the Scotch® Create line and have loved everyone! My favorite is the spray adhesive!

  1. Love this! And super cute to use in a kid room – informal and fun Christmas decor for the little ones. And you’re right, that little wooden tree could be easily duplicated but so much easier when you find it already made. Great post!
