Making Homemade Flour Tortillas is much easier than you think and the result is so much more delicious than store bought!

Homemade Flour Tortillas

Last week I posted the perfect homemade pizza crust recipe and promised you that it blows store bought crust out of the water. I am going to have to say the same thing about these tortillas…once you make them, it is nearly impossible to go back to store bought. These tortillas use only 5 ingredients (two of which are salt and water, which I know you already have!) and don’t require any special tools other than a food processor. I always thought I would need a tortilla press to make these, but I was wrong! A rolling pin does just as good a job as a tortilla press ever would.

You may not think you have the time to make these, but honestly, they take only half an hour, which is how much time I would have spent running to the grocery store to buy tortillas. Since I always have the five ingredients on hand, this recipe comes together quickly without any grocery shopping in advance.

This is the third time that I have made these, and every time I serve them, everyone is always so impressed and wants to know how they are made. So if you are looking for a way to spice up taco night, I urge you to try these. They are so simple and easy and make your Mexican meals so much more delicious.

How to make homemade flour tortillas:

Source: Seeded at the Table

Ingredients:
3 cups flour
2 teaspoons baking powder
1 heaping tablespoon salt
5 tablespoons butterm softened (you may substitute shortening, lard, or olive oil, but I haven’t tried it)
3/4 to 1 cup water

Instructions:

Using the dough hook, pulse the dry ingredients in the food processor for about 5 seconds until crumbs form.

Scrape down sides of the bowl and run food processor while slowly streaming in the water. When a cohesive ball forms and begins traveling around the bowl, knead for another 30 seconds. If the dough ball is too sticky, add a little more flour until workable. Transfer the dough to a lightly floured surface or pastry mat.

Divide the dough into 12 equal pieces. It is easiest to do this by using a kitchen scale. If weighing, each ball should be about 2 oz. If eyeballing it, each ball should be about golf ball sized.

Cover the dough balls with a clean kitchen towel for 10 minutes to let rest. Preheat a heavy skillet or frying pan to medium high heat. When 10 minutes are up, begin by rolling out one dough ball at a time into a thin round disc. Keep the other balls covered while you work.

Put your flattened disc into the skillet and cook on both sides for about 10-15 seconds or until small bubbles form and are golden brown. Don’t overcook or they will become too chewy. Transfer to a flat surface to let cool.
Once cool, you can serve immediately, or store. Store in a sealed zip loc bag for up to 3 days. You can also freeze them for up to a month.  Before serving, bring back to room temperature or warm slightly in the microwave.

I had a question about the pastry mat I use, so I thought I’d share. In both this recipe and in the pizza crust, I use this Conimar Pastry mat. This mat has been one of my favorite purchases because its so big, doesn’t slip, cleans up well, and gives such a great surface for rolling out dough. I pull this out to use so much more than I ever expected. Here is the link if you are interested! (Affiliate)
